Experience Uganda

Uganda is a beautiful country with a wealth of natural resources, but because of political and economical constraints, poverty is a prevalent shadow on the otherwise sunny landscape.

Here are some more facts you may not know about Uganda:

1. There are lots of kids! Half the population is under the age of 15, making Uganda the second youngest country in the world.
2. The people of Uganda are known for their hospitality and kindness. In 2005, women from one of the poorest slums in Uganda spent two weeks breaking rocks to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The women, most of whom were displaced by civil war and who earned less than a dollar a day, contributed over $1,000 to the Katrina relief effort!
3. The average church service in Uganda lasts between 4 to 6 hours.
4. If you are presented with a meal of of pan fried grasshoppers in Uganda, consider yourself a special guest because it is one of the favorite treats in the country.
5. Uganda sits on the equator and daylight almost always lasts 12 hours. However, temperatures are not as hot as you’d think. Maximum daily temperatures average between 77°F-90°F across the various regions.
6. Most Ugandans still lead a rural lifestyle, with 87% of the population living in the countryside.

Ugandans have made huge strides in decreasing extreme poverty over the past 20 years (especially as caused by HIV & AIDS), but there is still a long way to go.

   The life expectancy in Uganda is only 54 years.
   
2. In Uganda over half (55%) of people live below the poverty line.
   
3. 1 in 4 Ugandan children under 5 years of age are malnourished.
   
4. Only 4 out of 10 Ugandans can easily get to safe drinking water.
