Today we would like to introduce you to two ambitious young men from Haiti who want to share their dreams with you. Then you will get the chance to invest in a young dreamer through sponsorship. To start though, let’s try a fun activity based on a Haitian fable about a dog and a cat who have different ideas about how to use their time.

Activity: Fill in the Fable

Print out the story, and then before reading it, ask other players to call out silly words to complete the blanks in the word bank. Then read the story aloud, filling in those blanks with players’ words!

Teenaged Entrepreneur

Now we would like to introduce you to a young man who does know how to use his time wisely.

Meet Enock.

Living in the slums of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Mimose couldn’t provide for her family of five when her husband died. But she prayed to God that, because her talented son Enock had a loving sponsor who provided for him to be enrolled in our program, they would have an opportunity to change their future.

The program at the Baptist Church of Martissant offers opportunities like vocational training and a caring staff that sees each child’s God-given potential – potential like Enock’s to become the entrepreneur he is today at only 17 years old.

Watch this video about Enock.

Mimose remembers the moment she knew that God had answered her prayers for Enock and his microenterprise. It was when she was feeling desperate and depressed, with nothing to give to her babies. Enock handed her a $100 Haitian bill that he got from selling bracelets and other things he had made by hand.

Mimose said, “It was like Jesus coming down to the Earth that day. I will never forget about that day, as it was on that Saturday that I came to realize the meaning of a Bible verse that Enock’s sponsor had shared in a letter. It was Jeremiah 29:11.”

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (NIV)

New Hope for the Future

Another Haitian with big hopes for the future is Beguens. Nine years ago he was elected to Parliament! Check out this video.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What dreams do you have for the future?
  2. What will be some challenges to achieving your dream? How would those challenges be different if your family lived in poverty?
  3. Who will help you achieve your dreams?

CLOSING

To bring today’s time in Haiti to a close, read this verse aloud and then take a moment to pray for the children of Haiti.

BIBLE VERSE

Luke 6:38 (NIV) –  “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

PRAYER

Jesus, thank you for giving me a family – a big global family of people all over the world who believe and trust in You. I pray for the children around the world who don’t know You yet. Make me an example for them. Help me to use my words to share about Your love and what You did on the cross for them. Amen.
